The integration of sensory information is important for the development and use of skills that are needed to perform all sorts of activities such as buttoning up a shirt, handwriting, using a keyboard, colouring-in, making a 3D Lego model, putting shoes on, tying up shoelaces, riding a bike, climbing, catching a ball, writing, reading, finger painting, cooking, eating, remaining focused and attending to tasks, self-regulation and adaptive behaviours, purposeful interaction with the environment … to name just a few.
When the integration of sensory information is affected, learning or doing everyday tasks becomes difficult.
Sensory integration therapy is recommended for children up to eight years of age. It consists of an individualised program containing movement-based activities selected to meet each child’s unique needs.
